While some westernish countries probably have different views regarding lex talionis than the parties directly involved, views which were arguably heavily influenced by Jesus and St. Augustine, an important thing about the whole "eye for an eye" or "mirror damage" concept is that is about law and court and stuff.

Now, even though I agree that unlawful deeds should be investigated and those responsible for them prosecuted and punished, I certainly don't agree with any spiral of violence. In fact there should be an immediate cease-fire, and whichever negotiations should start off with stressing the obvious, that in these matters the political process can not and will not even be started as long there is whichever (para)military attempt to influence the political process, and that is not even talking about terrorist attacks which should in no way be encouraged for it as the devil telling the good man to jump into death.
